The 3-2-1 backup rule

If the answer is a pause, your backups need a rule. Use this one — 3-2-1.

Here’s a question I ask every business owner: if a flood took your office tonight, could you be back up and running tomorrow?

If the answer is a pause, your backups need a rule. Use this one — 3-2-1.

Keep 3 copies of everything that matters. Store them on 2 different types of storage. Keep 1 copy offsite, away from the building.

In practice, it looks like this: the files on your computer, a copy on an external drive, and a copy in the cloud. A fire, a flood, or a ransomware attack can take one or two of those. It rarely takes all three.

One more thing, and it’s the part everybody skips: test your restores. A backup nobody has ever restored from is a hope, not a backup. Once a quarter, pick a file and bring it back. If it works, you know. If it doesn’t, you found out on a quiet Tuesday instead of the worst day of your year.

Not sure your backups would pass the flood test? Call me at (361) 704-1373 and I’ll give you a straight assessment of where you stand.
